Ngwenya chases another record

AmaZulu striker Thando Ngwenya will set a new Premier Soccer League record for goals scored in successive league matches if he gets on the scoresheet in Tuesday’s Betway Premiership debut against Durban city.
The 23-year old Zimbabwe international has netted in all of AmaZulu’s outings this season -- seven in the league against Stellenbosch, Orlando Pirates, Siwelele, Mamelodi Sundowns, Richards Bay, Marumo Gallants and Polokwane City plus in the MTN8 quarter-final loss at home to Sekhukhune United.

Scoring in eight successive matches in all competitions is already a record and hew can now add goals in successive league to that achievement.
When he scored the only goal of the last league game against Polokwane City he matched the record of goals in successive league matches, which is jointly held by Esau Kanyenda and Grant Young.
Malawian international Kanyenda, who sadly passed away aged 43 last December, scored in seven successive league fixtures for Jomo Cosmos between February and April 2002.
He started with a double against Manning Rangers, two more against Santos and then a single goal in games against Wits University and Sundowns before a hat-trick scored against Umtata Bucks. The sequence continued with goals against Black Leopards and SuperSport United.
Kanyenda scored 17 goals in total in the 2001-02 campaign to finish one behind Golden Boot winner Ishmael Maluleke of Manning Rangers.
Young scored in seven successive matches for Hellenic in the 1999-2000 season with Gavin Hunt as his coach.
He netted in a 2-1 loss to SuperSport in the third game of the league campaign and then scored in successive clashes against Classic, Umtata Bucks, Ajax Cape Town, Moroka Swallows, AmaZulu and Wits. Young finished the season with 14 league goals.
Ngwenya’s eight league goals put him top of this season’s scoring charts, three ahead of second placed Nqaba Xulu of Richards Bay.
