Matthew de Villiers recorded his maiden List A century and Gideon Peters registered his maiden five-wicket haul in the format to steer the Dafabet Warriors to an 11-run win over the NWU Dragons at St George's Park on Tuesday.

The Warriors, who were asked to bat first by the visitors, scored 262-8 in 50 overs. The Dragons put up a good fight before they were bowled out for 251 in 49 overs.

De Villiers scored an outstanding 113 from 101 balls in the victory, while Peters finished the match with five wickets for 48 runs in 10 overs.

The victory helps the Warriors to consolidate their position at the top of the table. They are still unbeaten after four outings.

De Villiers, who came into the match with a top score of 49, showed maturity in his innings.

The captain, who arrived at the crease in the seventh over, was watchful in the early part of his innings before he unfurled his full range of shots as he cantered to his maiden century. The 25-year-old faced 94 deliveries to reach the milestone.

The Warriors' captain was part of two crucial partnerships for the hosts; an 88-run second-wicket partnership with Sinethemba Qeshile (44), and his 83-run fifth-wicket stand with Jean du Plessis (36).

He lost his wicket while trying to launch a Caleb Seleka delivery out of the park. He missed and the ball cannoned onto the stumps.

'FIFER' FOR PETERS

Gideon Peters, who was introduced into the attack in the middle overs, helped the Warriors stage a fightback after a rollicking start by the Dragons.

Wihan Lubbe, who led the charge for the Dragons' chase with a 113-ball 80, shared a brisk 60-run opening stand with Meeka-eel Prince (20).

Their industrious opening stand gave the Dragons a firm foundation. The Warriors wrestled back control through the trio of Gideon Peters, Senuran Muthusamy and Thomas Kaber.

The trio pulled things back so much that the visitors, who were scoring at a rate of seven runs an over in the first 15 overs, were going at 4.9 in the 34th over.

At one point, the Dragons went from 99-1 after 18 overs to 110-3 after 22.3 overs.

Lubbe, who reached his half-century in 58 deliveries, scored 30 runs off the next 55 balls he faced.

The visitors needed Lubbe to replicate De Villiers’s innings earlier in the day for them to stand a chance, but Kerwin Mungroo scuppered those plans.

Mungroo, who finished the match with two wickets for 53 runs in nine overs, swung the pendulum firmly in the Warriors' favour with Lubbe and Ruan de Swardt's (47) dismissals in the 38th and 46th overs.

His efforts, along with those of Patrick Kruger and Thomas Kaber, who contributed a wicket each, complemented Peters’s brilliance.
