A stunning spell of fast bowling from Marco Jansen saw India collapse from 102-4 to 122-7 before staggering to 174-7 after two sessions on the third day of the second test against South Africa at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Monday morning.

India captain and dangerman, Rishabh Pant, charged down the wicket looking to smash the left arm pace man over cover but could only edge the delivery to ‘keeper Kyle Verreynne to depart for seven having driven his first ball from Simon Harmer for six to get off the mark.

Nitish Kumar Reddy (10) gloved a fierce bouncer from Jansen (17-3-43-4) towards the vacant gully region only to see Aiden Markram sprint from slip and dive to take an astonishing catch before Ravindra Jadeja (6) became the second batsman to be bounced out.

The veteran left hander attempted to duck the short ball but it crashed into his shoulder before ricocheting onto his bat and carrying to the slip cordon where Markram completed another, routine catch.

It completed an astonishing collapse for the home side which had reached the relative comfort of 95-1 just 20 minutes before the end of the first session before offspinner Harmer (21-3-61-2) claimed two quick wickets on the stroke of ‘tea’ and India lost three in the space of 20 balls to collapse to 102-4.

The home side made a solid start adding 65 for the first wicket before KL Rahul (22) edged Keshav Maharaj to Markram at slip but appeared to have consolidated well with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan taking the score to 95-1.

Jaiswal’s composed and stylish innings came to a close when a Harmer delivery gripped and ‘stopped’ as he attempted a backfoot cover drive resulting in a low catch to Jansen at backward point. The left hander’s 58 from 97 balls contained seven driven and swept fours and a slog-swept six against Harmer.

South Africa’s dominant session was completed when Sai Sudharsan (15) pulled a short ball from Harmer to midwicket where Ryan Rickelton juggled but caught a diving catch before Dhruv Jurel made a mess of a pull shot against Jansen and lobbed a catch to Maharaj at mid on to depart for an 11-ball duck.

Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav will resume after the break on 34 and 14 respectively with another 116 runs required just to remove the possibility of following on.
