AFRICAN WRAP: Wanyonyi, Dambile star in Zurich

Africa's athletes produced several standout performances as the Diamond League regular season concluded in Zurich on Thursday night, with Kenya, Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Uganda, Ethiopia and Nigeria all featuring prominently.

KENYA LEADS THE CHARGE

Emmanuel Wanyonyi won a high-quality men's 800m in 1:41.76, holding off Algeria's Djamel Sedjati in a thrilling finish.

In the women's 3000m steeplechase, Faith Cherotich claimed victory in 8:55.82, narrowly beating compatriot Doris Lemngole, while Uganda's Peruth Chemutai finished third.

Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech was runner-up in the men's 1500m, clocking 3:31.84.

ALGERIA SHINES IN THE 800M

Djamel Sedjati finished second in the men's 800m with 1:41.83, just fractions behind Wanyonyi.

Fellow Algerian Slimane Moula took third in 1:43.52, giving Algeria two athletes on the podium.

SOUTH AFRICA ON THE PODIUM

Sinesipho Dambile delivered one of the country's best performances of the night, finishing second in the men's 200m in 19.82, behind American Kenneth Bednarek.

"I am happy with my consistency, but I still need to work on my execution," Dambile said after the race. "I messed up putting it together well, especially coming out of the curve. It is always fun to race, but at the same time I am asking myself 'what can I improve?' So I enjoy and analyse at the same time."

Dambile, who achieved podium places at five Diamond League meetings this season, was set to line up among the favourites in the 200m sprint at the series final to be held in Brussels, Belgium on 4 and 5 September.

NIGERIA'S AMUSAN IMPRESSES

Former world champion Tobi Amusan finished second in the women's 100m hurdles in 12.23, behind American world-record breaker Masai Russell (12.09).

MOROCCO IN THE MIX

Anass Essayi secured fourth place in a stacked men's 1500m field, running 3:32.05 and finishing ahead of Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

UGANDA REACHES THE PODIUM

Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai took third in the women's 3000m steeplechase with 8:58.28.

ETHIOPIAN RESULTS

Saida Tsehaye placed fourth in the women's 800m in 1:57.33.

Ethiopia also placed athletes in the top ten of the men's 3000m through Biniam Mehary, Mezgebu Sime, and Abdrselam Worku.
