David ‘Killer’ Miller almost pulled off a stunning chase for the Delhi Capitals, only to blow it at the death as the Gujarat Titans clinched a breathtaking one-run win in a thrilling Tata IPL clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday night.

Miller battled through a thumb injury, that had seen him leave the field earlier in the chase, returning when his team desperately needed a hero and slammed an unbeaten 41 off 20 balls (3x4; 3x6), but having dragged his team to the line he fumbled in the last over.

Needing 13 to win off the last six balls bowled by Prasidh Krishna, a first ball four to Vipraj Nigam (12), followed by him caught off the second ball, and a first ball single from Kuldeep Yadav (1) meant eight was needed off the last three.

Miller absolutely monstered the fourth ball straight over Krishna’s head for a huge six, leaving two needed from two, but then turned down a single to level the scores off the penultimate ball, and missed the last ball, with Yadav unable to get home for the bye, with the run out leaving them just short.

It was an incredible finish to a match that was largely dominated by the batsmen, as the Capitals finished on 209-8, largely thanks to a 52 ball 92 from KL Rahul, featuring 11 fours and four sixes, which is the highest score of this year’s competition so far.

Opener Pathum Nissanka was the other home batter to make a strong contribution, hitting 41 off 24 (6x4; 1x6), at the top of the order, while Titans Afghan spinner Rashid Khan starred with superb figures of 3-17 in his four overs.

For the visiting Titans their winning score of 210-4 was set up by a trio of half centuries from captain Shubman Gill, 70 off 45 (4x4; 5x6), Jos Buttler, 52 off 27 (3x4; 5x6), and Washington Sundar, 55 off 32 (6x4; 2x6).

Buttler completely dominated a 60-run second-wicket stand with Gill, contributing 52 of those runs which helped them get off to a strong start, and when he fell in the eighth over, bowled by Yadav, it left the Titans on 79-2.

But the innings' biggest stand then followed, as Gill and Sundar combined for a 104-run partnership off 60 balls, and at that stage they looked to be on for a huge score, only for Lungi Ngidi, who was the pick of the Capitals' bowlers picking up 1-24 in his four overs, to claim the big wicket of the captain.

That slowed the Capitals down over the final few overs as they only managed 27 off the last 15 balls, although Sundar did bring up a well-deserved half century before falling in the last over.
