Carnell, Makhanya in comfortable Cup win

Philadelphia Union handed out another thrashing in the Concacaf Champions Cup as Bradley Carnell’s team beat Defence Force of Trinidad & Tobago 7-0 at home in Thursday’s second leg of their first-round tie.

After winning 5-0 in Port of Spain last week, they advance to the second round 12-0 on aggregate but will now have a much tougher clash against Club América of Mexico.

The Concacaf Champions Cup is the Caribbean, Central and North American equivalent of the Champions League and a route for the winner to book a place at the next Club World Cup in 2020.

South African defender Olwethu Makhanya played only the first half as former Bafana fullback Carnell rotated his team. Makhanya scored one of the goals on the away leg last week.

Philadelphia’s next opponent is the most popular club in Mexico who play their games at the Azteca Stadium, where Bafana Bafana will meet Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup in June.

Club América has won a joint-record seven Concacaf Champions Cups and will be away in Philadelphia in the first leg next month before hosting the return game.
