Bosch, Tunnicliffe push Proteas Women close to 200

The South African Women have made full use of the toss advantage, electing to bat first and putting on an impressive display of attacking cricket against their Zimbabwean counterparts at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Sunday afternoon.

The Proteas Ladies finished their innings on 193 for 3, a commanding total built on the back of some brutally efficient batting in the middle overs.

It was wayward bowling from Zimbabwe in the opening exchanges that allowed South Africa to seize the initiative early. Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch (65) punished loose deliveries with ruthless precision, rattling along at 11 runs per over for the first three overs. The pair looked set for a substantial partnership until Tendai Makusha (3-0-23-1) struck with her fourth ball, trapping Wolvaardt in front of the stumps. The South African captain departed for 10 from 10 balls - a brief cameo that included one boundary - but Makusha's opening spell was sharp, conceding just 2 runs alongside the crucial breakthrough.

Bosch, however, was in devastating form. The batter was particularly ruthless on anything that strayed down the leg side, accumulating five boundaries from just her first 13 deliveries. By the end of the powerplay, with Nondumiso Shangase (23) struggling early after taking seven balls to get off the mark, the Proteas ladies had already raced to 48 for one. The 50 arrived from just 40 balls, adorned with seven fours.

Bosch brought up her half-century from 24 balls with nine boundaries - her second of the tour - before reaching the midway point unbeaten on 65 from 30 balls with 12 fours. Her second-wicket partnership with Shangase had yielded 50 from 35 balls when she drove Lindokuhle Mabhera (4-0-40-1) on the up straight to Nabhera Sibanda in the covers. Bosch's departure for 65 from 31 balls ended a 64-run stand from 45 deliveries.

What followed was a masterclass in finishing from Faye Tunnicliffe and Annerie Dercksen. Tunnicliffe, in particular, was breath-taking. The batter struck four towering sixes - one each over long off and midwicket, a third over the same boundary and a fourth straight over the bowler's head - while adding three fours for good measure. Her unbeaten 52 from just 34 balls proved the difference-maker in the final stages.

Dercksen, too, played a polished hand with 36 from 20 balls including two maximums of her own. The unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership worth 88 runs from 51 balls between Tunnicliffe and Dercksen absolutely plundered the Zimbabwe bowlers in the death overs. The 100 came up from 73 balls with 15 fours already struck, while the 150 milestone arrived from 109 balls with 20 fours and a pair of sixes decorating the boundary.

Zimbabwe's bowling attack, despite Makusha's early intervention, ultimately lacked the teeth needed to restrict a side in such devastating form. The hosts will need significant adjustments heading into the remainder of the series if they are to close the gap on their southern neighbours.
