CAPE TOWN CLASH: Abdool on the brink

Carrying serious momentum following a sensational weekend at Aldo Scribante, the 2026 GR Cup heads to the Western Cape for the penultimate round of the season at Killarney International Raceway on 18–19 September.

Round 5 in Gqeberha delivered some of the tightest margins of the campaign as SuperSport’s Abdool pushed his season tally to ten victories from ten starts. The reigning champion kicked off his 2026 campaign at Killarney back in March, scoring a double victory during a searing heatwave in the Mother City.

As the field makes it return to the Cape, the target on Abdool’s back has never been larger. News24’s Craig Nicholson arrives sitting second in the Media Challenge standings. After an accidental gearbox setting compromised his qualifying run in Gqeberha, Nicholson carved through the pack with decisive overtakes to take second in Race 2. He heads to Cape Town seeking an outright win.

"This is potentially a championship-defining weekend for the Media Class," said Abdool. "While I’m looking forward to battling Devon for outright honours across the combined grid, at this critical stage I need to consider a pragmatic approach. Neither of us wants to jeopardize our respective championship bids. A split-second mistake can unravel a season's worth of hard work, I’m approaching Killarney with measured caution."

With 28 points remaining across the final four heats of the year, Abdool can mathematically put the title out of reach this weekend, though Nicholson remains a relentless threat ready to capitalise on any misstep.

Media Standoff for Third

While the title fight commands the spotlight, the battle for the final step on the Media championship podium is deadlocked. eNCA’s Justin Ford and AutoTrader’s Tayedza Mbiri enter the weekend tied on 25 points apiece, with Mbiri determined to reclaim the advantage after recent setbacks. However, with Killarney serving as a home circuit for Ford, the local favourite will be targeting a statement performance in front of his home crowd.

Dealer Shuffle

The Dealer Challenge will also share centre stage with its own fierce title fight. NMI Toyota's Werner Venter retains a slender two-point championship lead over Devon Scott after bagging two second-place finishes at Aldo Scribante. While teammate Theo Brits stayed right on his heels with a pair of third-place podiums. Adding fuel to the fire is the surprise return of 2025 Dealer Champion Mario De Sousa, who slots into Rola Toyota’s Gen 2 Yaris DAT. De Sousa's pace could disrupt the front-runners and heavily influence the points swing heading into the finale.

The Hot Seat: Broadcaster Swaps Mic for Helmet

The latest driver to step into the GR Cup "Hot Seat" is broadcaster Kriya Gangiah, creating a SuperSport double presence in the pit lane. While Abdool chases back-to-back titles, his colleague, best known for fronting F1 Extra: Africa Trackside, makes her competitive circuit racing debut.

"I always get the opportunity to talk about racing and understand the theory behind it," said Gangiah. "Now I finally get to put that theory into practice. I’ve driven road cars on various circuits before, but never Killarney, so this is going to be a completely new experience."

While Gangiah joked that her primary objective is simply to "keep it on the black stuff," she is eager to trade the studio for the cockpit.
