The 2026 Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa GR Cup season comes to a close at Zwartkops Raceway on 17 October, with the final round promising a fitting conclusion to a season characterized by fierce rivalries and memorable performances.

The championship was set to reach a pivotal moment at Killarney International Raceway last month, where SuperSport’s Nabil Abdool secured pole position ahead of the penultimate round.

Following the cancellation of the remaining race programme after the tragic events during the opening race, the championship standings remain unchanged, meaning the remaining titles will now be decided at the season finale.

SUPERSPORT: MEDIA CHAMPIONS IN WAITING

Abdool heads to the finale with a 22-point advantage over News24’s Craig Nicholson in the Media Challenge. With just 14 points available across the final two race heats, the reigning champion and SuperSport have mathematically secured the 2026 title. It marks another significant milestone for the SuperSport driver, who has enjoyed a remarkable season behind the wheel of his Toyota GR Corolla DAT.

“It's been a special season, and I'm incredibly grateful to SuperSport and the entire TGR family for the opportunity. I’d like to close off the season in the same way we started it, giving it everything and enjoying that final moment on track,” said Abdool.

Nicholson, meanwhile, will be looking to finish his campaign on a high, having shown strong pace throughout the season and established himself as Abdool's closest Media Challenge rival.

The battle for third place also remains open, with eNCA's Justin Ford and AutoTrader's Tayedza Mbiri entering the final round level on 25 points. With both drivers eager to secure the final step on the championship podium.

DEALER CHALLENGE TITLE STILL ON THE LINE

NMI Toyota's Werner Venter heads into the finale with a slender two-point advantage over GR Driving Academy's Devon Scott. Venter has consistently delivered the results needed to keep his championship challenge on track, but the returning Scott has proved to be a formidable presence and will be equally determined to claim the crown.

Venter's NMI Toyota teammate, Theo Brits, has also enjoyed a strong campaign as he defends his third-place standing against Rola Toyota's Marius Classen.

GR86 ACADEMY: REYNEKE AND WESTON GO HEAD-TO-HEAD

The GR86 Development Academy championship is set for a dramatic conclusion, with Kobus Reyneke holding a narrow three-point advantage over Connor Weston. The pair have been at the centre of an increasingly intense battle throughout the season, with both drivers demonstrating the pace and determination required to fight for the title.

Their most recent outing at Aldo Scribante brought a dramatic turn in the championship battle. Reyneke and Weston collided, taking each other out of contention and opening the door for Kian Fussell to claim victory. With just three points separating the championship protagonists, neither can afford another costly mistake at Zwartkops. Reyneke will be aiming to protect his advantage, while Weston has everything to play for as he looks to overturn the deficit in the final two heats. The final round presents an opportunity for the next generation of Toyota racing talent to finish the season on a high.

HOT SEAT OPPORTUNITY FOR MPHO AND KRIYA

The season finale will also see the return of the GR Cup Hot Seat initiative, with broadcasters Mpho Maboi and Kriya Gangiah set to take their places on the grid.

Maboi will make her first competitive appearance in the programme, stepping away from the microphone and into the cockpit to experience the demands of circuit racing first-hand.

Gangiah was originally scheduled to make her debut at Killarney, but the cancellation of the remaining programme meant her opportunity had to wait. She now joins Maboi at Zwartkops, giving both broadcasters the chance to experience the GR Cup from a driver's perspective.

The Hot Seat initiative continues to provide an exciting opportunity to introduce new faces to motorsport, offering participants an insight into the preparation, concentration and commitment required to compete on track.

While the championship contenders will be focused on their final results, the Hot Seat drivers will have their own goals as they prepare to take on the challenge of a competitive race weekend.

ONE FINAL CHAPTER

The 2026 GR Cup season has delivered memorable performances, fierce rivalries and championship battles that have gone down to the wire. Zwartkops provides the final stage for the remaining contenders to settle their scores.

On 17 October, the chequered flag will fall on another season of GR Cup racing, with champions crowned, rivalries concluded and the foundations laid for the next chapter.
