SA WRAP: Nene leads sprinters at Diamond League in Poland

South African sprinters delivered solid results at the Silesia leg of the Diamond League series in Chorzow, Poland, on Sunday.

In the men's 400m event, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Zakithi Nene took third place in 44.37 seconds.

Nene achieved a podium place for the fourth time this season on the Diamond League circuit.

Ahead of him, world champion Collen Kebinatshipi won the race in 43.59, with Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin of the United States grabbing the runner-up spot in 43.83.

In the men's 100m final, SA champion Gift Leotlela finished fifth in 9.95 seconds and national record holder Akani Simbine ended seventh in 9.96.

In a close race, won by world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica in a meeting record of 9.83, all nine men ran under 10 seconds.

Earlier, in the opening round, Leotlela was second in his heat in 9.92 and Simbine finished third in the same race in a season's best of 9.93.

The next leg of the Diamond League, which will be the last meeting ahead of the series final, will be held in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday 27 August.
