Liga strugglers Sevilla on Tuesday appointed Luis Garcia Plaza as manager, the day after firing the Argentinian Matias Almeyda.

Sevilla, who finished 17th in LaLiga last season, are currently 15th in the table but just three points above the relegation zone.

"Sevilla FC have reached an agreement with Madrid-born coach Luis Garcia Plaza," said the club in a statement on Tuesday adding that the new coach "will take charge of the first team to 30 June 2027".

Garcia Plaza, 53, has been out of work since being sacked by Alaves in December 2024 but is stacked with experience having managed 229 Liga matches with Levante, Getafe and Villarreal as well as Alaves.

He has also managed clubs in the United Arab Emirates, China and Saudi Arabia.

Almeyda, who was appointed this season and managed the team in 32 competitive matches, was sacked after a 2-0 defeat to Valencia on Saturday that left Sevilla deep in a relegation battle.

Sevilla have not won a Spanish domestic trophy since a 2010 Copa Del Rey triumph but the club have won the UEFA Cup and its successor the Europa League seven times since 2006.
