The new, shortened version of the HSBC SVNS Series found them wanting, as they edged home in the pool of death against Olympic Champions France in their first game, only to lose to Fiji and then Argentina in their next games.
Although they finished on the same points as Argentina, France’s massive 59-17 win over Argentina and their 24-19 win over Fiji meant they and the South Sea Island team qualified and the Springbok Sevens side - who lost 19-14 to Argentina, were sent to the playoffs for fifth to eighth place.
South Africa will play Great Britain in their 5th place semifinal at 9.54am on Sunday.
