Ngwenya on course to match league scoring record

AmaZulu striker Thando Ngwenya will equal the Betway Premiership’s record for scoring in successive league matches if he nets for his club in a seventh successive game when they play at Polokwane City on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwe international has scored in each of AmaZulu’s first six league matches of the season with goals against Stellenbosch (penalty), Orlando Pirates, Siwelele, Mamelodi Sundowns (two), Richards Bay and the winner against Marumo Gallants last Saturday.

He also got two goals in the MTN8 quarterfinal loss to Sekhukhune United last month and has already set a new PSL record for the most goals in successive matches in all competitions.

He is now on course to match the record of goals in successive league matches, which is jointly held by Esau Kanyenda and Grant Young.

Malawian international Kanyenda, who sadly passed away aged 43 last December, scored in seven successive league fixtures for Jomo Cosmos between February and April 2002.

He started with a double against Manning Rangers, two more against Santos and then a single goal in games against Wits University and Sundowns before a hat-trick scored against Umtata Bucks. The sequence continued with goals against Black Leopards and SuperSport United.

Kanyenda scored 17 goals in total in the 2001-02 campaign to finish one behind Golden Boot winner Ishmael Maluleke of Manning Rangers.

Young scored in seven successive matches for Hellenic in the 1999-2000 season with Gavin Hunt as his coach.

He netted in a 2-1 loss to SuperSport in the third game of the league campaign and then scored in successive clashes against Classic, Umtata Bucks, Ajax Cape Town, Moroka Swallows, AmaZulu and Wits. Young finished the season with 14 league goals.
